Botanical Treasures at the Woodland Edge - October 28 to November 8, 2015
The exhibition was held in the Papermill Gallery at Todmorden Mills from October 28th to November 8th with the opening reception taking place on Saturday October 31.
Entries were down considerably from the last exhibit with 28 BAC members submitting a total of 54 pieces to the show. In an effort to bring more clarity to the exhibit the jurors were asked to provide their judging criteria so that it could be shared with the membership which, I believe, is the first time this has ever been done in BAC. They were unfortunately not available until after the deadline so a short extension was granted. One artist used this opportunity to exchange one of her submissions while another was able to complete an additional entry. The extra days were also used to allow some of the artists more time to send in their images or send better quality images in for the jury. Most images were sent via email with 3 artists also sending either a disk or flash drive as well. It is the coordinating group’s intention that these criteria be used as the basis for all future juried shows.
The initial phase of the judging was done entirely online and following very careful and thoughtful deliberations the judges, Alex Henderson, Shelley Wall, and Kathryn Chorney felt that of the 54 entries, they have juried in 42 works. The judges were all very impressed with the high quality of many of the works. But they also aimed to be as inclusive as possible and worked to strike a good balance. There was good discussion and the botanical aspects were all thoroughly considered and vetted. The exhibit will admittedly be somewhat smaller this time, but believe the quality will be high.
The 42 selected pieces represented 23 artists. Six of whom live in provinces other than Ontario. This represents an increase over the last exhibition which indicates that there is greater interest from members across Canada and that they believe this exhibition to be valuable and an excellent opportunity in which to showcase their work.
The final prize selections took place in person at the gallery after the works have been hung. Alex and Kathryn arrived early on October 31st to discuss each piece and make their final decisions.
Post cards were designed and printed for distribution as well as an electronic version for emailing and online presence on the BAC website as well as the SONSI website.
