Val was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, and continues to call Toronto home. She has taken courses at the Cedar Ridge Creative Centre, the Ontario College of Art and Design and the Art Gallery of Ontario Gallery School, as well as watercolour and pen and ink workshops with Barry Coombs.
Along with her sister Barb (Moxford) Baniuk, Val has been studying under Tasira Strimban at the Barishev School of Fine Art for the past three, years where she continues to develop her botanical technique in watercolour. Vacationing in the Haliburton Highlands and her love of gardening provide her with much material to work from in this area.
Other mediums include acrylic and coloured pencil, wherein she will often include her favourite subjects – her daughter and her three cats.
Val works full-time at a downtown law firm and volunteers part-time at a Toronto cat shelter. She is working on a part-time basis toward her degree in Fine Art History at the University of Toronto. Val is also a member of the World Wildlife Fund, the Toronto Humane Society and the Council of Canadians.
